The reality of rail transport in Catalonia: a permanent challenge

A journey full of uncertainty

In Catalonia, starting a commuter train trip has become an experience full of insecurities. Not only do users have to prepare to wait, but they are often found with an unexpected combination of unexpected advances and interruptions that affect their daily routine.

A structural problem

The current situation cannot be attributed solely to the decisions of the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, or the Minister of Territory, Silvia Paneque. Despite the constant criticism of some political sectors, the Rodalies system has been neglected for years, with insufficient investments that have left the infrastructure in a precarious state.

The priority of high speed

As Spain has opted for a high -speed network that impresses, the commuter lines have been marginalized. Users find rates that have little to do with what would be expected of efficient public service. The inconsistency between expectations and reality is becoming more and more evident.

Expectations and realities

Years ago, a senior US office was surprised by the magnitude of the Spanish high-speed network, emphasizing that its country could not afford a similar investment. This statement highlights the paradox that Spain is experiencing: a country with a extensive railway infrastructure but does not always meet the needs of its citizens.

Incomplete commitments

Despite investment promises in Rodalies, the reality is still disappointing. Users are trapped in a routine of delays, saturated trains and poor communication. The feeling of abandonment is palpable, and the priority of the Government seems to be rather the high speed than the improvement of basic services.

The need for a change

The train, which should be a fundamental pillar for sustainable mobility, is increasingly perceived as a last resort option. This situation not only affects the welfare of thousands of Catalans, but also reflects a territorial injustice, where certain areas receive substantial investments while Catalonia struggles to maintain a minimally acceptable service.

An uncertain future

With 2025 in sight, it is worrying that the railway system continues to be in a precarious situation. Effective measures need to be taken to reverse this trend and ensure that citizens have access to decent and reliable public transport. The time to act is now, before the consequences are irreversible.
