The value of literature in everyday life

Literature as a window to human emotion

When we are questioned about the usefulness of literature, it is crucial to understand that it goes beyond the mere transmission of information. During my youth, I used to hear sounds coming from the next apartment, which turned out to be moans of pleasure. These episodes, far from being simple noises, represented a window into human emotional expression, similar to a storm that broke out in the night. Although at first I did not know their origin, over time I understood that they were manifestations of pleasure, almost like a nocturnal festival of emotions. These moments, although cinematic in my imagination, led me to reflect on the complexity of human emotions, long before experiencing them for myself.

Literature as a teacher of emotional understanding

Upon meeting the neighbor and her partner, I initially admired the man, not understanding the depth of emotions his partner was experiencing. It was through literature that I understood that truly understanding human emotions is an unattainable challenge. A poem by Gabriel Ferrater, titled Kensington, revealed this truth to me. This poem taught me that no one can fully understand another’s sensations when experiencing pleasure. Literature, therefore, becomes a tool to try to explain life and human emotions, as Ferrater expressed in his poem.

Literature as a translator of incomprehension

At seventeen years old, reading a book becomes a dialogue with transcendence, since literature is the translation of incomprehension into words that help us reflect, organize feelings and face dreams or regrets with the company of others. . Authors like Miquel Martí i Pol, although unknown personally, have left an indelible mark on my life, accompanying me in moments of loss. Literature, therefore, connects us with transcendence and helps us face life with the company of the words of others.

Literature as a tool for human understanding

Literature does not seek to rigorously explain the present or document the past, but rather serves to remind us that life goes beyond everyday actions. It invites us to live, feel and share our experiences with others. Even when we face the incomprehension of others, literature gives us the possibility to express and understand our emotions in a deeper way. Therefore, education in literature is essential, since its true usefulness lies in making us feel less alone and more alive in a world full of complex emotions.
