Pastoral Care as a Life Experience
Recently, during a meeting of professionals dedicated to youth ministry, I had the opportunity to listen to Cardinal Tagle, a prominent figure in the Catholic community, who shared a profound reflection on the importance of evangelization outside the walls of religious institutions. He stated: “Evangelization is carried out in the streets, not only inside cathedrals.” With the imminent beginning of the Jubilee of Hope, this idea resonates strongly, inviting us to think that “evangelization is found in common spaces and not only in classrooms.”
A New Approach to Christian Education
For educational institutions with a Christian orientation, pastoral care is not limited to catechesis or the organization of religious events. It is an invitation to live in a way that reflects the presence of Jesus in the school community every day. Educators play a key role in this mission, showing that the Gospel is translated into concrete actions: words of encouragement, an attitude of empathetic listening, understanding of the difficulties of each student and an active welcome of diversity, especially of migrants and refugees.
The Power of Fostering
Acceptance and love for all does not require grand speeches or ostentatious celebrations. If the school community becomes a space of genuine welcome, Jesus becomes present among us, allowing students, young people and their families to discover him in their day to day lives. The mission of the Christian school is to be clear in its message: Jesus is the one who accompanies you every step of the way.
Active Involvement of Students
It is essential that students feel like they are an active part of the ministry, not just spectators of the initiatives proposed. A living ministry, embodied in the teaching staff and support staff, can motivate young people to participate in activities of listening, supporting and serving those who need it most. These experiences not only help them connect with their community, but also open their eyes to the realities that other people live.
A Gospel that Transforms
Confronting the realities of everyday life can lead students to discover a Gospel that transforms. This experience makes them bearers of hope, helping them see the world with a new perspective.
Pastoral Care That Goes Beyond the Classroom
Our pastoral work must extend beyond the classroom. While the Catholic religion is already part of the curriculum, it is essential that students learn to look at the world with hope and trust in the dignity of each individual. Schools that practice this pastoral work not only seek academic excellence, but also foster a deep commitment to others and to truth.
A Committed and Hopeful School
This school is not afraid to declare “God loves you and accompanies you”, while respecting other beliefs. It listens to the voices of science and current culture, and presents itself as a space where each student and their family can explore their own transcendence. It is a place where the relationship with the other as a brother is encouraged, and where the educational staff must have the courage to live the Gospel in a palpable way, creating an environment that allows them to discover their vocation and contribute to a better world.
