Introduction

On a day like today, 1,241 years ago, in Choisy, in the Kingdom of the Franks, Queen Bertha passed away, a prominent figure in the history of the Carolingian monarchy. Bertha, widow of King Pepin the Short and mother of Emperor Charlemagne, left a significant legacy in the kingdom and was the creator of the brand of Gothia.

Berta’s intelligence and power

Berta was recognized as one of the most intelligent women of her time and played an important role during her husband’s reign. As effective queen of the Franks, Bertha projected and promoted Carolingian expansion towards the south, being a key figure in the expansion of the kingdom.

The Gotia brand and its legacy

Berta led the project of expansion towards the south, towards the Pyrenees, and the recovery of Narbonensis, which had been occupied by the Arabs. To achieve this goal, she sought the support of the Visigothic exiles from Tarraconensis and Narbonensis, who had taken refuge in the kingdom of the Franks during the Arab invasion.

The conquered territory was called the Gotia mark and many of the first counts appointed by Berta and Pipino were descendants of the elites of the Visigothic exile. The March of Gotia covered the Mediterranean arc between the Rhône delta and the Llobregat delta, and was completed by Charlemagne and his grandson Louis the Pious.

Berta’s legacy

Berta’s legacy endured even after her death. The Carolingian armies continued their expansion towards the south, reaching places such as Elna, Llívia, La Seu d’Urgell, Girona and Empúries. Although the more ambitious project of conquering the Hispanic Brand was never carried out, the Gotia brand stood as a testament to Berta’s legacy and her vision of expansion.

Conclusion

Queen Bertha was a prominent figure in the history of the Frankish kingdom. Her intelligence and leadership were instrumental in Carolingian expansion southward and the creation of the Gotia brand. Her legacy endured through the centuries and her vision of expansion left a lasting mark on European history.
