Amazon Prime Video removes AI dubbing for Korean movies: ‘The result was a disgrace’

The streaming platform Amazon Prime Video has made the decision to withdraw dubbing made by Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Korean films. This measure has been carried out due to the poor quality of the dubbing generated by AI, which has generated great controversy in the Spanish dubbing sector.

The problem arose when it was discovered that some Korean series available on Amazon Prime Video had AI dubbing that lacked emotion and quality. Voice actors and users of the platform expressed their dissatisfaction with this situation, considering that the dubbing generated by AI was embarrassing and did not meet the expected quality standards.

Jaime Roca, president of the Voice Artists Union (AVTA), has stated that this protest was not an orchestrated campaign, but rather a spontaneous reaction that spread throughout all Spanish-speaking countries, starting in Mexico, where Spanish dubbing has a great relevance.

The discomfort originated when checking the results of three Korean series, known as K-Dramas, which are very popular around the world. The series identified with bad dubbing done by AI were ‘My man is a cupid’, ‘Faithful to love’ and ‘The beat of my heart’. According to Roca, the results were really embarrassing, since no advanced software was used and the quality of the dubbing was very low. Not only were there incorrect intonations, but there was also no proper editing or mixing.

Although Amazon Prime Video has not issued any official statement in this regard, AI-generated dubbing has been removed from Korean movies available on the platform. The dubbing actors consider that this measure is due to the negative reaction from users and professionals in the sector.

It is important to highlight that voice actors are waiting for laws or regulations to be approved that protect them in this type of situation. AI technology has advanced rapidly in recent years, and regulations need to be established to ensure the quality and employment of dubbing professionals.

In conclusion, Amazon Prime Video has removed AI dubbing for Korean movies due to their poor quality. This decision was made in response to an outcry from voice actors and users of the platform, who considered the AI-generated dubbing to be embarrassing. Although no official statement has been issued by Amazon Prime Video, dubs have been removed from Korean movies available on the platform. Voice actors hope that regulations will be established that protect their employment and guarantee quality in AI dubbing.
