The kidnapping situation
On Thursday night, the Swiss police intervened in a hijacking situation on a train traveling between the cities of Baulmes and Yverdon-les-Baines. A man armed with an ax and a knife had kidnapped 15 people inside the train.
The 32-year-old individual forced the driver to leave his seat and joined the other passengers. The train was immobilized at the Essert-sous-Champvent station with the doors closed, thus alerting the authorities.
The intervention of the police
Police quickly arrived at the scene and set up a security perimeter. Negotiation specialists were activated to establish contact with the individual. After several hours of negotiation, the authorities decided to carry out an assault around 10:15 p.m.
During the assault, the gunman was neutralized and seriously injured. However, none of the abductees were physically harmed during the operation.
Ongoing investigation
The Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation to clarify the reasons for this kidnapping. At the moment, the Swiss authorities have not revealed the motivations of the author.
