The self-managed cooperative La Igualitària promotes an initiative in Poble-sec

A new cooperative proposal to Barcelona

La Igualitària is a project that emerged from the Cooperasec entity in collaboration with the inhabitants of Poble-sec, in Barcelona. This initiative promotes the creation of a self-managed and participatory consumer cooperative that offers local, seasonal and organic products at Carrer Vallhorrat number 18, with an expected opening next April.

Healthy and sustainable food

The promoters of this proposal defend a balanced diet at reasonable prices, both for producers and consumers, emphasizing the importance of collaborating with local suppliers in Catalonia. Gemma Rovira, spokesperson for the Cooperasec network, emphasizes that the aim is to offer essential fresh products such as fruit, vegetables, dairy products, cereals, as well as hygiene and household items.

Community awareness and participation space

The cooperative aspires to be a meeting point for holding workshops and meetings that address issues such as food waste and food sovereignty. Through La Igualitària, we want to demonstrate how popular initiative, cooperation and solidarity can be engines of change to achieve a fairer society, breaking with existing capitalist dynamics.

Recovering a cooperative history

The choice of the name La Igualitària refers to a consumer cooperative that emerged in Poble-sec in 1902, becoming a benchmark of popular self-organization in the neighborhood during long strikes, providing support to workers with food, basic products and medicines

Call for community collaboration

A funding campaign is currently underway to ensure the viability of the cooperative and its opening in April. Both Cooperasec and the residents of Poble-sec invite those interested in investing in the project and strengthening the local community.

The Equality and the Base: promotion of community self-management

La Igualitària is part of La Base, a Cooperative University located in Poble-sec, which brings together several cooperative and self-managed initiatives with the aim of promoting neighborhood autonomy, as is the case in this Barcelona neighborhood.

Rescuing the tradition of workers’ canteens

This project was born with the intention of reviving the spirit of workers’ canteens, spaces where friendship, love and even insurrection arose in an environment of fraternity, camaraderie and self-management as fundamental values.
