A Nova was union: Belén López Leadra Ccoo

A historical choice

For the first time in his career, Commissions Obreras (CCOO) has a woman at the helm. Belén López has been chosen as new Secretary General with an impressive 98.1% support during the union congress, a moment marked by the replacement of Javier Pacheco, who had held the post for eight years. López, in his speech, stated that it was time for a woman to play such a relevant role in one of the most influential unions in the country, but emphasized the need to normalize this situation.

The challenges of a complex context

The new leader faces a panorama full of uncertainties, marked by recent announcements of tariffs by the United States and the reactions of other nations, which has altered economic forecasts. López emphasized that this crisis would significantly impact workers, urged administrations to establish a ‘social shield’ that protects the most vulnerable employees in the face of this turbulence.

The defense of democracy and labor rights

In his term, López emphasized that CCOO’s priority will be the defense of democracy, which is being threatened. In addition, he has called on political parties to work together to implement progressive policies, warning that it is essential for rulers to focus on the real needs of the working class instead of engaging in political strategies.

The importance of care and social welfare

López also emphasized the need to guarantee labor agreements that ensure the purchasing power of workers. One of his key demands is the creation of a national care plan. “The responsibility of caring must be a collective matter, where we all contribute with our time and resources,” he said.

Reinforcement of public services

These demands go hand in hand with a request for improvements in public services, especially in sectors such as geriatrics and home care. López has urged governments to facilitate the negotiation of paid leave and reductions in working hours for those employees who need to attend to their family responsibilities.
