Alarming increase in fatal occupational accidents in 2024

A worrying trend in occupational accidents

In the first half of 2024, fatal workplace incidents have experienced a significant increase of 7.9%, with 299 workers losing their lives, an increase of 22 people compared to the same period of the previous year, according to provisional statistics of the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy.

Traffic and working conditions as key factors

Fatal accidents in itinere, which occur during the journey to work or home, have also increased, registering 61 deaths, an increase of 1.7% compared to last year. In total, 360 occupational deaths are counted until June, an increase of 23 victims compared to 2023, which represents an increase of 6.8%.

Main causes of occupational accidents

According to the data, the most common causes of occupational death include heart attacks, strokes, entrapment, amputations, traffic accidents and falls. These statistics underline the urgent need to implement improvements in working conditions and worker safety.

Increase in accidents with work leave

Occupational accidents that resulted in leave have increased by 0.2% in the first six months of 2024, with a total of 306,633 incidents. Of these, 264,267 occurred within the workplace, while 42,366 were accidents in itinere, with a notable increase of 4.4% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Services sector, the most affected

The service sector has suffered the highest number of occupational deaths, with 154 fatalities, representing an increase of 4.8% compared to the previous year. The construction sector has also seen an alarming increase, with 70 deaths, 16 more than in the same period in 2023, reflecting an increase of 29.6%. In industry, 48 workers lost their lives, an increase of 14.3%.

Decrease in the agricultural sector

Conversely, the agricultural sector has experienced a decrease in fatal accidents, with 27 deaths, seven less than in the first half of 2023, which represents a reduction of 20.6%.
