An event from Elna (Rosselló), in Northern Catalonia

The president-in-exile and Junts per Catalunya MEP, Carles Puigdemont, will make an important announcement this afternoon. In an event from Elna (Rosselló), in Northern Catalonia, Puigdemont will reveal whether he will finally head the Junts list in the next parliamentary elections, which will take place on May 12. This decision is awaited with anticipation, as Puigdemont is a key figure in the Catalan independence movement.

Faced with this scenario, other political forces make a proposal

Faced with this scenario, other political forces such as Action for the Republic, Moviment d’Esquerres de Catalunya and Reagrupament Independentista have issued a statement proposing a “country candidacy” led by Carles Puigdemont. This proposal aims to build a broad sovereignist front that brings together personalities, political forces and civic organizations that want to represent the return of the legitimate president at the head of the highest Catalan institution.

The objectives of the candidacy

According to the statement, this candidacy must present a program of “maximum national and democratic demands” and a “minimum” sectoral program. The aim is to represent a large majority of citizens through the defense of social justice, the welfare model, sustainable economic progress, language policies and Catalonia’s international presence. The candidacy has the conviction that independence is the necessary condition for good government at the service of the real needs of the country.

A call to independence

The political forces that have issued the statement call on the various actors in the pro-independence world to join this proposal. They consider that the electoral advance, with the approval of the amnesty and the negotiation between Junts and the PSOE with an international mediator, offer a unique opportunity for the independence movement to recover the initiative and resume on October 1 from own institutions.

Criticism of the strategy of the Republican Left

The statement also criticizes the strategy of Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC), stating that the electoral advance is a direct consequence of the failure of this strategy. The republicans are accused of squandering the pro-independence majority in votes and seats and of bringing the government of Pere Aragonès to an unsustainable parliamentary minority situation.
