Restructuring of the Valencian government
The president of the Valencian Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, has made a quick decision after Vox announced its break with the Popular Party in the autonomous governments they shared. Mazón was the first to react and dismissed the three members of Vox from his executive, including the first vice president, without waiting for them to present his resignation. This decision comes one day before the first anniversary of Mazón’s inauguration as Valencian president.
Despite the break with Vox, Mazón has expressed his intention to form a government alone without calling early elections. Currently, the Popular Party has 40 of the 99 seats in the Corts Valencianas and until now had needed the votes of Vox to approve several measures, such as the budgets. As part of the restructuring of his government, Mazón has reduced the number of ministries from 10 to 9. In addition, he has appointed Susana Camarero as sole vice president and Miguel Barrachina as Minister of Agriculture.
Criticism of Vox’s decision
In his public statement, Carlos Mazón has criticized Vox’s unilateral decision and has indicated that the needs of the Valencian Community have not been taken into account. Although he has thanked the work and loyalty of the former Vox councillors, he has stated that it does not seem appropriate to make decisions about the Valencian Community from outside it. Mazón has reaffirmed his commitment to providing stability to autonomy and has expressed his willingness to work with the new Consell.
Unknown about the role of the president of Les Corts
It has not yet been clarified whether the president of Les Corts, Llanos Massó, from Vox, will have to leave her position. Carlos Mazón has stated that this is a question that she must decide herself and the starting point is hers. For her part, he has highlighted that her objective is to give stability to autonomy and has thanked the work and loyalty of the former Vox councilors.
