Elections and their Unforeseeable Consequences

A New Political Scene

Recently, we have witnessed an electoral process whose implications are uncertain. Although the performance of the different parties in voter preference was predictable, the possible alliances and agreements that may arise as a result of these results are still unpredictable. At this time, we cannot ensure whether a new tripartite, so longed for by many, will continue to add up after the final CERA count. In short, we do not know which coalition will prevail, its stability, and whether a new vote will be necessary for the regional parliament in October.

A Change in the Political Debate

The levels of participation and the role of the independence movement in the campaign have blurred the borders between the parties, displacing the traditional axis of confrontation. Although some parties maintain their pro-independence stance, this issue has not been the main focus of the campaign. It seems that the debate on emancipation has moved to the background, suggesting a definitive burial of the so-called process. The focus has shifted to other aspects of the political programme, such as managing growing unrest and resolving social problems.

Challenges for the Left

The left has faced significant challenges, with parties such as Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya losing votes to the PSC. The management of social achievements, such as the increase in the minimum wage and the revaluation of pensions, has benefited the PSC more than other parties. Meanwhile, other problems such as the PISA report, the precariousness of the public housing stock, and the inability to resolve railway and agricultural problems have impacted the political campaign.

The Influence of a New Generation

A new generation of voters, characterized by their emotional fragility but also by their polarized participation, has emerged as a determining factor in these elections. Their abstention reflects an indifference towards the political class, and their participation tends to place them at the extremes of the political spectrum. This generation distrusts politicians and could be key in promoting a change in the electoral system.

Future Challenges

The current political landscape poses significant challenges, with the possibility of additional electoral calls. Future political decisions could be influenced by emotion as much as reason, which could lead to a second election in October.
