ERC’s Ultimatum
This Monday, Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) intensified its pressure on the Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya (PSC) through an opinion article, in which it reiterated its ultimatum: “fiscal sovereignty or electoral repetition”. The republican formation has made it clear that they will abandon the negotiations for the investiture of Salvador Illa if an agreement is not reached that allows Catalonia to manage its own taxes.
Position of ERC in the Negotiation
In an article published by a reference media, the ERC negotiating team, made up of its general secretary, Marta Rovira, the president of the ERC National Council, Josep Maria Jové, the member of Parliament Juli Fernández and Oriol López, have warned that it is necessary to take “a giant step” in order to reach a satisfactory agreement.
Financing as Key
Republicans have identified funding as the critical element in unlocking negotiations. In addition, they have flatly rejected the tax consortium provided for in the Statute, considering it a “superficial operation” that will not solve the existing problems. In this sense, they have stated that they will not accept “financing proposals that do not act as a solution” and have asked for a “structural” change in this aspect.
Recognition of the role of ERC
The leaders of ERC consider that the elections of May 12 were a point of reference to inaugurate a new political cycle, which forces them to remain in the opposition despite their “key role” in the electoral scenario post elections In the opinion article, the ERC leaders highlight the results obtained during the previous legislature, where they sought to end the “repression” through pardons and amnesty. His immediate aspiration is to guarantee fiscal sovereignty and address the political conflict between Catalonia and the Spanish government.
A Future Includes a Referendum
Finally, the Republicans conclude their article with a strong warning: they will not give up on the idea of a referendum that can solve the existing conflict with the State. His determination in this aspect underlines his position firmly committed to the national aspirations of Catalonia.
