Felipe VI: Ten years on the Spanish throne

A decade of reign

On June 19, Felipe VI will celebrate ten years on the Spanish throne after the high-profile abdication of his father, Juan Carlos I. After a decade holding the crown, the majority of citizens of the Spanish State value the Bourbon’s performance positively. , with two big exceptions: Catalans and young people.

According to a survey carried out by IMOP for Vanitatis, 46.4% of those surveyed approve of the work of Felipe VI. Although he fails to seduce half of the citizens, only 20.9% outright reject his actions in recent years. It is the first time that it exceeds the grade of 6.5, but without reaching the grade.

Opinions divided by territory

When the data is analyzed by territory, it is observed that the Catalans are the ones who show the most rejection towards the king’s work. In Catalonia, 52.5% of those surveyed reject his work, while only 18% approve of it and 29% are indifferent. On the other hand, in Andalusia, the monarch has greater support, with 55.7% approval.

In general terms, Felipe VI obtains an average rating of 6.6.

Distancing with young people

During these ten years, the monarch has failed to seduce the youngest citizens. According to the survey, the age group of 18 to 24 years is the only one in which there is more rejection than approval of Felipe VI, with 30% against and 28.6% approval. Indifference towards the monarch’s work is high in this age group and in the next, from 25 to 34 years old.

Monarchy vs. republic

Despite the indifference towards the monarchy, the survey reveals that republican options are not the majority among citizens. 38% of those surveyed opt to replace the monarchy with a republic, while 34.6% prefer to maintain the current system. Furthermore, there are citizens who support a transition to a republic without considering it a priority (7.5%), and others think that a change in the State model should be evaluated based on the performance of the monarchy (15.3%).
