Investiture negotiations and elections in the Parliament of Catalonia

Deadline for investiture and possible elections

The Parliament has started the countdown for the investiture of a new president of the Generalitat, setting the deadline of August 26. If no candidate manages to obtain the necessary support to be invested, new elections will automatically be called on October 13. It is important to note that ERC does not want to take these negotiations to the limit, as happened in the investiture of Pere Aragonès in 2021.

Pressure to reach agreements

During the party’s extraordinary National Council, Marta Rovira of ERC has warned the PSC and Junts, with whom they have already begun negotiating, that to obtain the support of ERC, they must have reached an agreement before the end of July. Rovira has expressed the importance of avoiding last-minute agreements, emphasizing the need for time to explain any pre-agreement to the militancy and allow them to reflect on it.

Key issues in the negotiations

In addition to the unique financing for Catalonia, ERC has highlighted other fundamental issues in the negotiations, such as progress in the country’s self-determination, the defense of the Catalan language and the well-being of citizens through social policies. The party has appointed negotiating teams to address each of these issues, underscoring the importance of making progress in these areas to avoid a repeat election.

ERC position and possible alliances

Marta Rovira has made it clear that ERC does not seek to be the exclusive solution of this legislature, opening the possibility of a pact between Junts and the PSC, or between the PSC and the right. However, any agreement involving ERC must have the endorsement of the party’s membership.
