A Way to Overcome and Return to Politics
Josep Rull, born in Terrassa in 1968, was sentenced in October 2019 by the Supreme Court to 10 and a half years in prison for his involvement in the 1-O referendum as a member of Carles Puigdemont’s Government. After more than a year and a half in pre-trial detention, the pardon and the reform of the Penal Code have marked his return to active politics. Last June 10, he assumed the position of president of the Parliament of Catalonia, becoming the first of the political prisoners to hold an institutional position of responsibility.
A New Chapter in the Presidency of the Parliament
Since the presidency of the Parliament, Rull has faced new challenges, including the conduct of an investiture process without a candidate and the possibility of the return of Carles Puigdemont, with the imminent risk of his arrest. Despite the uncertainty, Rull has expressed his determination to defend his political and democratic agenda, despite the difficulties and legal obstacles.
The Judicial Situation and the Political Implications
In an interview, Rull reflects on the decision of the Supreme Court, criticizing his action as wild and rebellious. In addition, he expresses his concern about the non-application of amnesty in certain situations, highlighting the paradox of this situation and its influence on the current political landscape.
The Role of Parliament and the Defense of the Rights of Deputies
As President of Parliament, Rull has committed to guaranteeing the integrity of MPs, defending their right to vote and be voted for. He emphasized the importance of preserving parliamentary inviolability and ensuring that no MP is arrested or detained in the exercise of his duties, despite the adverse circumstances.
Challenges and Perspectives
Rull has also acknowledged future challenges, including the need to review Parliament’s security protocols in the face of the possibility of arrests, as well as the possible reform of parliamentary regulations to adapt to the new political reality. Despite the uncertainties, Rull remains firm in the defense of fundamental rights and freedoms, stressing the importance of democracy and political stability in the future of Catalonia.
