Labor standards in the Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica

Work requirements in the Vatican

Every company or workplace has a specific set of rules that workers must follow, and the Vatican is no exception. The Holy See has updated the regulations for those interested in working in the Basilica of Saint Peter, imposing very specific requirements that, despite being strict, seek to create an atmosphere of fraternity and mutual trust to better welcome pilgrims and visitors.

Controversy and changes in the rules

These rules have generated controversy, especially those related to the personal appearance of workers. The regulation requires that, in case of marriage, it must be by the church, and prohibits being part of organizations ‘incompatible’ with the Christian faith. In addition, visible tattoos and piercings are prohibited, all with the aim of maintaining ‘decency’ and a suitable working environment.

Justification of changes

The spokesman for the basilica, Enzo Fortunato, has explained that these rules seek to value the originality and beauty of each person, and that they are necessary to better welcome pilgrims and visitors, especially in the run-up to the 2025 Jubilee.

Additional requirements

In addition to the appearance requirements, workers at the Sant Pere Factory are also required to profess the Catholic faith and live according to its principles, as well as to present a certificate of religious, moral and civil commitment, and in case of marriage, show the canonical marriage certificate.
