Negotiations and Advances: The Political Context in Catalonia

A New Political Chapter

Before Carles Puigdemont gave his support to Pedro Sánchez to make him president of the Government, he promised that negotiations with the PSOE would be carried out early. In a speech prior to the investiture, Puigdemont highlighted the importance of a historic agreement that would guarantee the defense of Catalan and other official languages in Congress, as well as the promotion of Catalan in Europe.

However, the implementation of these commitments has generated controversy. Despite promises, many deputies continue to use Spanish, which has raised concerns in the secessionist community.

Challenges in the European Union

In relation to the official status of Catalan in the European Union, a lack of significant progress has been observed. Although the issue was addressed at a meeting of the General Affairs Council in Brussels, the issue only occupied a brief space of time, reflecting the low priority given to Carles Puigdemont’s historic aspirations.

The position of the Spanish administration, which has urged the EU to respect linguistic diversity, has not achieved strong support, which has generated discontent in the pro-independence circle.

Political Strategies and Electoral Results

Puigdemont’s political strategy has faced challenges, especially after Salvador Illa’s victory in the elections, which has weakened the independence movement’s position in parliament. Faced with this situation, Puigdemont has turned to the Consell de la República to revitalize the independence unity, generating criticism for his egocentric approach.

On the other hand, the position of Oriol Junqueras, who has maintained a strategic position in the opposition, has generated speculation about the evolution of Esquerra in the current political context.

Future perspectives

As the European elections approach, the political landscape in Catalonia becomes more dynamic. The presence of Tomàs Molina in the electoral campaign adds a new element of national interest, which promises an exciting electoral campaign full of uncertainty.
