Continuity of the Conversations between Junts and the PSOE
The negotiations between Junts and the PSOE continue with determination. After the approval of the Amnesty law in the Congress of Deputies last week, the candidate for the European elections of the 9-J of the formation, Toni Comín, confirmed this Saturday that his party holds regular meetings with the party socialist These meetings include the participation of an “international mediator” and explore the possibility that Catalonia could call a referendum on self-determination. Also from ERC, Senator Joan Queralt has assured that his formation is working on a referendum that will be “totally legal”, although it is expected that it will take time to materialize.
Context of the Agreements and the Conversations
These Junts negotiations are part of the agreements that the party led by Carles Puigdemont and the PSOE established to ensure the investiture of Pedro Sánchez, who lost the general elections last July, but retained the presidency of the Spanish government after close a pact with the majority of opposition forces in the Congress of Deputies, including Junts and ERC.
Resolution Perspectives
As Comín explained, the areas of negotiation focus on structural improvements for the self-government of Catalonia and the democratic resolution of the Catalan political conflict. Junts’ candidate has expressed his intention to hold “an agreed referendum” as a way of resolution, from Brussels. From Junts, it is affirmed that the negotiations are “discreet” and that the senators of their formation do not broadcast them live, in response to the announcement made by the ERC senator Joan Queralt about the negotiation of a referendum with the socialists.
ERC perspective
In an interview with Rac 1, Queralt stated that the Republicans are negotiating with the Spanish government a referendum that will be “totally legal”. However, the ERC senator has emphasized that the talks are progressing at a leisurely pace. “It will not be an immediate matter. The amnesty required six years”, he added.
