Oriol Junqueras and the Implications of his Post-Election Statements

Reactions to Oriol Junqueras’ Statements

The recent statements by Oriol Junqueras, president of Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya, in which he stated his intention to continue leading his party despite the results of 12-M, have generated an intense debate. Both criticism and expressions of support have emerged both inside and outside his party.

The acting Minister of the Interior, Joan Ignasi Elena, expressed his support for Junqueras, indicating that he does not see the need for him to deviate from his position and that this feeling is shared by many.

Implications in the Case of Electoral Repetition

In the event of a repeat election, Junqueras could not be the ERC candidate due to his disqualification. This would imply that Esquerra would have to select another leader to head its list.

Joan Ignasi Elena refrained from making speculations about possible candidates, emphasizing that a repeat election would not be desirable for the Catalans, since she considers that they do not deserve it.

Opinions about Pere Aragonès

In relation to the resignation of Pere Aragonès due to the unfavorable results of the Catalan elections, Elena praised his performance at the head of the Generalitat, highlighting his ability to inspire confidence and his work during his mandate.

Response to Minister Puente

In an interview on Catalunya Radio, Joan Ignasi Elena criticized the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, accusing him of diverting attention and generating disputes to avoid addressing the maintenance problem at Rodalies.

Elena questioned Puente’s ability to point out sabotage when the police investigation is still ongoing and there are no indications pointing in that direction. Furthermore, she reiterated that responsibility for track security lies with Adif, and questioned the magnitude of the impact of copper thefts on the Rodalies system.
