Pedro Sánchez appears before Congress to give explanations about Begoña Gómez’s business

The president of the Spanish government appears at his own request

The president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, has appeared before the Congress of Deputies to give explanations about the businesses of his wife, Begoña Gómez. In an appearance at his own request, Sánchez has affirmed that he will be ‘delighted to appear’ at the Senate’s investigation commission on the Koldo case with his wife if the PP so requests.

The statements of Pedro Sánchez

During his appearance, Pedro Sánchez defended his wife’s professionalism and integrity, stating that she is an honest, serious and responsible professional. He has rejected the information about an alleged case of influence peddling as ‘balls’, ‘lies’ and ‘mud’, but he has not gone into arguing why this is so.

The PP leader’s response

In response to the explanations of Pedro Sánchez, the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has maintained the threat of having Sánchez and Gómez appear in the lower house. He has urged the Spanish president to give the clear explanations that his position requires of him and has pointed out that, the more time passes without giving the information that the citizens are asking for, the more obvious it becomes that he wants to hide it.

The recognition of Palestine

Before dealing with the issue of Begoña Gómez’s business, Pedro Sánchez has announced that the Council of Ministers will recognize the Palestinian state at the next meeting to be held on May 28. He justified this decision on moral grounds and deplored the Russian and Israeli offensives in Ukrainian and Palestinian territory. He has also criticized Israel’s response to Hamas, saying it jeopardizes the two-state solution (https://www.softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/).
