Ultimatum from Pedro Sánchez to the PP
The President of the Government has issued a warning to the Popular Party, indicating that its executive will present a reform of the General Council of the Judiciary if the Popular Party continues to block the renewal of the governing body of Spanish judges. In an interview on TVE, he indicated that if there is no agreement between the PSOE and PP this June, its executive will carry out a reform that could eliminate the power of the CGPJ to make appointments to the Supreme Court and the Superior Courts of Justice. According to the socialist leader, this power, currently in the hands of a conservative and expired majority, is the main perverse incentive that drives the PP to oppose the renewal of the members.
Call to improve democratic quality
Furthermore, Pedro Sánchez has promised to present in July a package of measures to improve democratic quality, separating it from the possible reform of the CGPJ. He has emphasized that they are two different issues that are not related in any way.
Transparency in media financing
In relation to the ‘pseudo media’ sometimes denounced by Pedro Sánchez himself, the President of the Government has mentioned the possibility of implementing measures to improve transparency in the financing of these media outlets. Likewise, he has pointed out that the ‘mud machine’, which spreads hoaxes, has its headquarters in the Community of Madrid, which he considers a problem for Spanish politics.
Response to criticism
During the government control session, the leader of ERC in Congress, Gabriel Rufián, urged the socialist leader to promote tangible measures instead of limiting himself to statements and publications on Twitter. The response of the President of the Government was forceful, affirming his commitment to present a package of democratic quality before the end of the summer, assuring that he will fulfill his promise.
