Pere Aragonès demands a bilateral negotiation of funding for Catalonia

The president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, calls for a bilateral negotiation of funding for Catalonia

The president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, has demanded of the Spanish government a bilateral negotiation of the new funding for Catalonia if Pedro Sánchez wants to maintain ERC’s support in Congress. In a conference in Madrid, Aragonès made any new agreement with the PSOE conditional on a change in the attitude of the Socialists, who took a few hours to close the door to the unique financing proposal drawn up by the Department of the Economy. The republican leader, who is also the head of the ERC list in the May 12 elections, recalled that Sánchez “committed” to address financing in a specific bilateral commission. “He will have to comply with the investment agreements and negotiate.”

ERC is pushing for compliance with investment agreements

Both Aragonès and ERC are ready to assert their votes and will demand compliance with all agreements for the investiture of Pedro Sánchez. The Republicans are upset by the different treatment that Junts receives despite having the same deputies and with the advance of the elections they are ready to raise the tone without so many considerations. “There are 3 years left, if everything continues”, Aragonès warned. The president of the Generalitat has reminded Sánchez that during the legislature “many decisions” will require the votes of the Catalan parties and, therefore, has demanded that funding be a “priority” for Moncloa.

The Spanish government responds by criticizing the Generalitat’s management

The Spanish government has tried to counteract the pressure coming from the Generalitat to negotiate new funding by accusing the Government of being responsible for the malfunctioning of public services in the country. “Look if it’s because of the Government’s management”, answered the First Vice-President and Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, to a question from ERC deputy Teresa Jordà. “Everyone is clear that the PSC is the guarantee to maintain the looting and suffocation of social policies”, said the ex-councillor, who now has a major role in the republican group in Madrid. “The financing model of the Illa candidate is for the citizens of Catalonia to continue paying and to remain silent.”
