The need to react

Jordi Turull, general secretary of Junts, has highlighted the importance of reacting to the lack of application of the amnesty by the Spanish judicial leadership. According to Turull, this lack of application is not legal and has multiple implications. In an interview on RAC1, Turull did not rule out the possibility of mobilizations if the president in exile Carles Puigdemont returns to Catalonia and is arrested. In that case, the country’s reaction to this fact will be called.

The last vestige of Francoism

Turull has harshly criticized the leadership of the Spanish judiciary, accusing them of trying to control politics and of being the last vestige of Francoism. According to him, the amnesty has no error, but it is the judges who have decided not to apply it. Turull has assured that this situation cannot be allowed to continue and that ways will be found to combat these judges.

The persecution of independence leaders

Turull has also mentioned Judge Joaquín Aguirre’s decision to deny the application of the amnesty to Puigdemont and refer his case to the Supreme Court, accusing him of high treason. Turull has warned that the justice system will look for any reason to persecute the independence leaders and has denounced that this judicial leadership has kidnapped democracy. Furthermore, he has reproached the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, for reaching an agreement with the PP to renew the General Council of the Judiciary.

Negotiations with ERC

Regarding the negotiations with ERC for a possible investiture of Puigdemont, Turull has denied having offered a joint electoral list to the Republicans. However, he has stated that they are working to maintain the independence movement in the Generalitat and reactivate the unity of action of sovereignty. Turull has highlighted that the conversations with ERC are deep and he has mentioned a recent meeting in Geneva with the general secretary of the Republicans, Marta Rovira.

Position on financing and investiture of the PSC leader

Turull has made it clear that they will not accept a change in the financing model that does not allow Catalonia to collect and manage its taxes. Furthermore, he has mentioned that they will be willing to support the national recognition of Catalonia, but has emphasized that the financing reform must be linked to the general budgets of the State and not to a possible investiture of the leader of the PSC, Salvador Illa.
