Reaction to Judicial Investigation for Treason and Embezzlement

Jordi Turull’s Reaction

The general secretary of Junts, Jordi Turull, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the actions of Judge Joaquín Aguirre, alleging that he seeks revenge without scruples or shame. This reaction arises following the opening of an investigation for treason and embezzlement in the Volhov case, which Turull considers a non-existent cause and a fanciful invention. Furthermore, he has pointed out that any pretext is valid to persecute the independence supporters.

The Judicial Decision

The head of the investigating court number 1 of Barcelona, Joaquín Aguirre, has initiated a separate investigation in the Volhov case, including the former president of the Generalitat Artur Mas, former members of the CDC such as Elsa Artadi and Víctor Terradellas, among others. Likewise, he has asked the higher judicial instance to investigate the president in exile, Carles Puigdemont, and the deputy Francesc de Dalmases, who have immunity. This decision comes after the Barcelona Court ordered him to annul the proceedings carried out since August of last year.

Gonzalo Boye’s Opinion

Carles Puigdemont’s lawyer, Gonzalo Boye, has criticised Judge Aguirre’s decision, calling it delusional and questioning its legality. Boye, who is also accused, has reproached the investigating judge for disregarding the resolutions of the Barcelona Provincial Court and for trying to discredit the legislative and judicial power.

Position of the General State Attorney’s Office

On the other hand, the General State Attorney’s Office has requested the application of the amnesty law to several pro-independence leaders, including Carles Puigdemont, Toni Comín, Oriol Junqueras, and others. In addition, it asks to lift the search and capture or detention orders that weigh on them, arguing that they can be amnestied for the crimes charged in the Supreme Court cases related to the 1-O referendum, including those of embezzlement, considering that they do not affected the interests of the EU.
