Renewal of Leadership in Esquerra Republicana: A Period of Tension and Change

A Commitment to the Renewal of Leadership

In her statement to the membership, Marta Rovira announced her decision not to seek re-election as general secretary, betting on a smooth transition and the renewal of leadership in Esquerra Republicana in view of the congress on November 30. Although there are still approximately five months to go until this event, uncertainty reigns as to whether the party leadership will change at the end of the year or whether Oriol Junqueras will manage to convince the membership that he is the right person to continue leading the party.

Internal Crisis and Tensions

The party plunged into an internal crisis after the results of 12-M, which represented the third consecutive electoral setback for ERC. This situation became a public battle through social networks, the media and even from the party’s press room, generating a period of tensions and internal conflicts.

Period of Uncertainty and Changes

During the last 55 days, the party has had to face a series of challenges, including the loss of the presidency of the Generalitat, the resignation of Pere Aragonès, the breakup of the Junqueras and Rovira tandem, the revelation of the authorship of defamatory posters, among others. These events have generated uncertainty and significant changes in the internal dynamics of the party.

Reactions and Resignations

The revelation of the authorship of the defamatory posters provoked a wave of reactions, especially among those aligned with Junqueras, and culminated in the resignation of Sergi Sabrià, who denied his involvement in the matter. This situation has shown the existence of two sectors within the party, generating additional tensions.

Future Challenges and Pending Decisions

The party faces the challenge of deciding on an investiture of Salvador Illa, with a disconcerted and tired militancy due to the internal war. In addition, a deadline has been set to reach an agreement at the end of the month, which poses crucial decisions for the future of the party.
