Sanctions from the Catalan Water Agency on Garrotxa Town Councils

The Regional Council of La Garrotxa and the Sanctions of the Catalan Water Agency

Recently, the Garrotxa County Council has expressed its opinion on the penalties imposed by the Catalan Water Agency on the County Councils for exceeding the established water consumption due to the drought. These fines have been applied to several municipalities, including Argelaguer, Maià de Montcal, Tortellà and Santa Pau, with penalties ranging from 300 to 5,000 euros.

Criticism of the President of the Council

In an interview with NacióGarrotxa, the president of the Council, Santi Reixach, has expressed his opposition to the administrative sanctions imposed. He has stated that he would prefer the penalties to be converted into local investments to improve infrastructure. In addition, he has shown his disagreement with the central administration regarding this issue.

Repairs and Resources

Reixach acknowledged that the Councils could have carried out more repairs on the pipes in advance, but also recalled that they were waiting for subsidies for these actions, which have already been granted. He highlighted the importance of improving infrastructure to avoid water losses.

Possible Resources and Exceptionality Phase

The President of the Council has expressed his confidence in the possibility that the Councils can appeal the sanctions imposed by the Catalan Water Agency and resolve this situation. It should be noted that the Garrotxa region has been in an exceptional phase due to drought for almost a year, with water consumption limited to 230 liters per inhabitant per day from May 2023.
