Pedro Sánchez announces the recognition of Palestine
The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has announced that next Tuesday, May 28, the Council of Ministers will approve the recognition of the Palestinian State. This decision has been agreed upon with the Sumar political party and reflects the majority feelings of the Spanish people.
In his appearance in the Congress of Deputies, Sánchez expressed his concern about the Russian and Israeli offensives in Ukraine and Palestine, respectively. He has argued that, for moral reasons, Spain has an obligation to support Palestine in the same way it does with Ukraine.
Rationale for recognition
Sánchez has stated that the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, does not have a peace project for Palestine. Furthermore, he has pointed out that the legitimate fight against Hamas has led to a response of terror by Israel, putting at risk the viability of the two-state solution.
The President of the Government has also mentioned that the prosecutor of the Hague Court has requested Netanyahu’s arrest, which reinforces the need to recognize the Palestinian State. Sánchez has stressed that a ceasefire is not enough and that it is necessary to take concrete measures to achieve peace in the region.
Appearance of Pedro Sánchez in Congress
In addition to the announcement about the recognition of Palestine, Pedro Sánchez has appeared in the Congress of Deputies to report on the latest meeting of the European Council and to give explanations about the business activity of his wife, Begoña Gómez. In relation to this last issue, the Civil Guard has ruled out the existence of signs of crime in the businesses of the presidential couple.
Sánchez’s appearance occurs a month after he announced his reflection on his continuity at the head of the Government. During his speech, he asked parliamentarians to avoid insults and lies, and to focus on the debate of ideas in a respectful manner.
Recognition of Palestine by other countries
In addition to Spain, other countries such as Ireland and Norway have also announced that they will recognize the Palestinian State on May 28. The leaders of these countries have stressed that the two-state solution is the only way to achieve peace in the Middle East.
