The Analysis of the Elections and Political Perspectives in Catalonia

ERC’s Moment of Reflection after the Electoral Results

Jaume Asens, the candidate of the Comuns for the European elections of 9-J, has expressed the need for ERC to take time to reflect on the result of 12-M, since he perceives the Republicans in a period of introspection. In an interview in La Xarxa, Asens has expressed his conviction that ERC will choose to carefully consider the result of the elections, seeking to reach an understanding with the left-wing forces. Asens has emphasized that the options are reduced to a progressive government or a repeat election, with no room for other alternatives.

The Challenge of Combating the Far Right

Asens has highlighted the fight against the extreme right as one of the main challenges ahead of the European elections. Furthermore, he has warned that if the right and the extreme right win, there will be cuts in acquired rights.

Electoral Arithmetic and Possible Majorities

Asens has pointed out that the arithmetic arising from the 12-M elections is overwhelming. According to his statements, the votes of Junts and ERC are not enough to reach an absolute majority, requiring the support of the PSC, which has refused to grant its votes.

The Projects in Dispute in the European Elections

The candidate of the Commons has stated that in the European elections two projects confront each other: one based on neoliberal policies of cuts to benefit banks and multinationals, and another that seeks to leave no one behind and promote social shields.

The Position of the Commons and the Call to the PSC

The commons have urged the leader of the PSC, Salvador Illa, to rule out any pact with Junts for the investiture. Joan Mena, spokesperson for Catalunya en Comú, has stressed the importance of a progressive government for stability in Catalonia, rejecting the possibility of electoral repetition.
