The Balearic Islands: Between Progress and Deregulation

Construction in Vulnerable Areas: A New Reality

Currently, in the Balearic Islands, the door is being opened to the construction of housing and tourist businesses in areas with a high risk of flooding, fires and other natural disasters. This disturbing trend even allows the legalization of structures built illegally on rustic land, although these areas should be protected.

A Change in Environmental Legislation

The recent elimination of the Environment Commission and the alteration of climate change laws have raised alarms among activists and citizens concerned about sustainability. This decision, approved in the Balearic Parliament, has been driven by a collaboration between the Popular Party and VOX, leaving environmental responsibilities behind to facilitate urban development.

Budgets and Political Blackmail

Budget negotiations have become a power game, where VOX uses the PP’s mistakes as bargaining chips to obtain concessions. This exchange has led to a situation where political decisions are made without considering the repercussions on the environment and society.

A Necessary Reflection on the Future

The current situation highlights the flaws of a political system that prioritizes private interests over the common good. The inadequate management of crises such as floods or fires, together with the permissiveness towards illegal constructions, pose a worrying scenario for the population.

Towards Popular Sovereignty

Facing this reality requires a reinforcement of community initiatives and mutual support, in order to regain control of our lives and prevent politics from becoming an instrument of exploitation. The key to a sustainable future lies in social justice and the defense of human dignity.
