The Catalan Funding Controversy and its Political Impact

The Wake-Up Call of Núñez Feijóo

The political climate in Spain has intensified around the issue of funding in Catalonia. The president of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has expressed his concern about what he considers a drastic change in the constitutional structure of the country, caused by the agreements between the PSOE and pro-independence parties.

A Dangerous Path

Feijóo argues that these alliances are fostering a ‘constitutional mutation’ that could lead to the dissolution of the Spanish Constitution. In a recent interview, he warned of the dangers of this trend, urging the need to stop what he describes as a movement that could put at risk 46 years of peaceful coexistence in Spain.

The Repercussions of the Agreement between ERC and PSC

The pact between Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) and the Socialist Party of Catalonia (PSC) to appoint Salvador Illa has been the subject of criticism from Feijóo. He believes that such an agreement is not only a challenge to the Constitution, but also reflects a transformation in the PSOE’s position towards a more confederal model of State.

Questioning the Unconstitutionality of the Catalan Quota

In line with his criticism, the leader of the PP has declared that the Catalan quota system is unconstitutional, since, in his opinion, it infringes the principle of territorial solidarity. He compared this system with the agreements that exist for the Basque Country and Navarre, suggesting that funding should be equal for all autonomous communities.

The PP’s Response and the Defense of Equality

Feijóo has assured that his party is committed to fighting against any form of inequality in access to essential services such as health and education. In this context, he announced a meeting scheduled for September 6 with regional leaders of the PP to discuss regional funding, emphasizing that this should be seen as a resource that belongs to all citizens, not just to the communities.

A Call for Democratic Unity

The popular leader called on all democrats in Spain to unite in the defence of equality and justice, stressing that this is a challenge that transcends individual political disputes. In his view, the current situation is unique in the country’s recent history.

Criticism of the Sánchez Administration

Feijóo has not spared criticism of Pedro Sánchez’s government, especially in relation to the management of funding for Catalonia. He criticized the lack of clarity of Minister María Jesús Montero and questioned the viability of a motion of censure, suggesting that Sánchez is the president who most deserves it, but warning that he is not willing to ‘auction off’ the presidency.

The Decline of the PSOE

The PP leader continued his criticism of the PSOE, claiming that the party has fallen into such decadence that members feel intimidated to voice disagreement. He said his party will seek a debate on the state of the nation to address issues he says are being ignored by the current government.
