The platform for the defense of press freedom of the Council of Europe has issued an alert regarding the threats directed at elDiario.es, requesting an investigation into this worrying matter. This level two alert refers to situations that represent a threat to press freedom, specifically due to cases of intimidation and harassment.
Isabel Díaz Ayuso’s chief of staff, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, is the center of these worrying threats. The European institution, made up of 46 countries on the continent, has expressed its concern over the threats made by Rodríguez through WhatsApp messages to the deputy director of elDiario.es Esther Palomera. These threats included the claim that he was going to ‘shred’ the outlet and the implication that they would have to close, followed by a derogatory message.
The reaction of the Council of Europe and the request for an investigation
Given this situation, the Council of Europe has asked Spain to carry out an investigation in this regard. The Spanish Government has a deadline of the end of June to respond to this investigation request.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has also called for a thorough investigation into Rodríguez’s behavior, emphasizing the importance of ensuring justice in this case.
