The dependency system: an obstacle course for those most in need

A collapsed system that condemns us to waiting

The dependency system in Spain is in a critical state, leaving thousands of dependent people trapped in an endless waiting list. In 2023, the number of deaths while waiting for assistance reached an alarming 12,280, a heartbreaking testament to the system’s inability to care for those who need it most.

Catalonia, a particularly worrying case

Catalonia, despite being the second autonomous community with the most people without receiving care, has managed to reduce the waiting list by almost 31%. However, the situation remains alarming, with more than 40,000 people dying on the waiting list in the last year. The mortality rate of those cared for exceeds expectations, especially in nursing homes.

An insufficient shock plan

The Shock Plan to Improve the Dependency System, despite entailing an increase in financing, has not managed to resolve the structural problems of the system. The number of dependency applications remains high, with more than 350,000 people waiting for a resolution.

Attention, a luxury within the reach of few

Despite the increase in the number of people served, coverage remains insufficient. More than 48,000 people remain unattended, while another 73,000 are awaiting resolution of their degree of dependency. The financial benefits, which represent almost half of the services offered, barely reach 230 euros per month, an insufficient amount to cover care costs.

A system that generates employment, but not well-being

The dependency system creates jobs, but at the cost of the suffering of those who depend on it. More than 43,000 people work in this sector, but the system remains unable to provide decent care to those who need it most.

A call to action

The situation of the dependency system in Spain is unsustainable. Radical change is needed to ensure dependent people receive the care they need and deserve. The government must take urgent measures to reduce the waiting list, increase coverage and improve the quality of care. Only in this way can we build a dignified and humane system of dependency.
