The Day ‘On the streets’

The ‘A peu de carrer’ conference held in the Torre dels Frares building of the UVIC brought together 300 people including militants, councilors and mayors of the coalition. According to the president of the EPM, Jordi Fàbrega, the aim of the day was to socialize government experiences and deepen the debate on the proposals and experiences developed by the coalition in the towns and cities of Catalonia around issues such as social inclusion , sustainability and local funding (https://www.softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/).

Councilor Xavier Tornafoch’s position

The councilor from Vigata of the coalition, Xavier Tornafoch, reaffirmed before the plenary against the Welcome Spaces (EBE) that they want to start as a pilot test in Vic and Reus. According to the ecosocialist councillor, the proposed measure is an attempt against the right to schooling since ‘with the alibi of integration it aims to keep the children of poor and immigrant families away from school.’ Tornafoch defended ‘a unique, Catalan, public, quality and welcoming school’ (https://www.softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/).

Demand for better local funding

The plenary also approved the Declaration of Vic to demand better funding from the local world. The mayor of El Prat del Llobregat, Lluís Tejedor, stated that ‘now that the negotiation of the new financing system is starting to be discussed, we want to demand a new satisfactory and sufficient local financing model so that the municipalities can develop with guarantees their task’ He recalled that ‘local expenditure in Spain accounts for only 13% of total state public expenditure, a percentage that is too small compared to other countries where there are also three levels of self-government’ (https://www.softcatala .org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/).
