Israel’s response to the recognition of the Palestinian State
After Pedro Sánchez announced this Tuesday the recognition of the Palestinian State by the Government, Israel’s response was immediate. The Israeli Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, has equated the second vice president, Yolanda Díaz, with the supreme leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, and with the leader of Hamas in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar. Through a tweet, Katz has also accused the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, of being complicit in inciting the murder of Jews for not stopping it.
The recognition of Palestine by Spain
This Tuesday, the Spanish State joins the 140 countries in the world that recognize the Palestinian State. The decision has been approved in the Council of Ministers and has been coordinated with Ireland and Norway. In an institutional appearance without questions, in Spanish and English, the Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, announced the historic decision whose sole objective is to help Israelis and Palestinians achieve peace.
Consensus among the Spanish population
Although the decision to recognize Palestine has been very controversial in the international sphere, it is widely shared by Spanish citizens. According to the Elcano Royal Institute barometer, 78% of Spaniards agree with recognizing the State of Palestine. Support for recognizing Palestine permeates both the right and the left of the political spectrum. Certainly, left-wing voters are more in favor of recognizing Palestine (94%), but among right-wing voters 54% are in favor of recognition.
