The recognition of the Spanish State in Palestine and its international repercussions

A controversial decision

The recent decision of the Spanish State to recognize Palestine has generated a great impact on the international political scene. This action, which has been harshly criticized by Israel, has joined other countries such as Ireland and Norway in recognizing the Palestinian State. Despite the controversy that has surrounded this decision, it is interesting to note that a large majority of Spanish citizens share it.

Transverse support

According to a study carried out by the Real Instituto Elcano, both left-wing and right-wing voters show support for the recognition of Palestine. 94% of left-wing voters are in favor, while 54% of right-wing voters also support this decision. In addition, it is observed that as the level of education increases, so does support for the Palestinian state. 81% of people with higher education are in favor, compared to 74% of people with compulsory education.

The two-state solution

Another relevant aspect is the position of Spanish citizens regarding the two-state solution. In recent years, there has been an increase in support for this option. 40% of citizens were in favor in 2021, while the percentage has increased to 60% in 2024. This trend is also reflected in other European countries, where the majority of the population is also in favor of the two-state solution .

Responsibility in the conflict

Regarding responsibility in the conflict between Israel and Palestine, there are different opinions. 44% of Spaniards blame Israel, while 48% consider that the responsibility is shared. This represents a change from 2016, when 63% of Spaniards pointed to Palestine and Israel equally. Regarding the current situation in Gaza, 50% of respondents blame Israel, while 34% consider that responsibility is shared and only 16% point to the Palestinians as being solely responsible.

Redefining recognition

The recognition of Palestine as a State has been approved by the Council of Ministers of Spain, together with Ireland and Norway. This decision has been taken with the aim of promoting peace, justice and consistency. Despite the criticism received by Israel, the Spanish government defends this action as a sign of commitment to the resolution of the conflict.
