A Centennial Tradition
In Sant Julià de Vilatorta, Easter Florida is a time awaited and celebrated, especially for the singing of the Caramelles del Roser, a tradition that dates back to 1590 and continues to this day. This cultural phenomenon isolated in the municipality is a source of pride for the people of Vilatortine, who every Easter Sunday wake up to the solemnity of the singers and the joys of the Roser.
Renewal and Continuity
The candy makers, accompanied by musicians, flag bearers and basket makers, walk the streets of the old town of Sant Julià in their traditional clothing, singing old and new compositions. In this year’s edition, it has been chosen to recover part of the repertoire, including pieces such as Terra Endins, Himne dels caramellaires, Four hundred years, Bordó Florit, Som Caramellaires and the Cançó del Terrissaire, in addition to presenting a new instrumentation for one of the most beloved candies, Rosa Vera.
Pride and Recognition
The celebration of the Caramelles del Roser in Sant Julià de Vilatorta is a source of pride for all the inhabitants, as it represents the preservation of a tradition rooted for centuries. This cultural event was recognized by the Government of the Generalitat of Catalonia as a Festive Patrimonial Element of National Interest and received the Sant Jordi Cross in 2016.
Generational Relief and Inclusion
The addition of new members, including the Caramelles Infantils, has brought a fresh air to the celebration, ensuring the continuity of this tradition. Although historically the Caramelles del Roser have been eminently masculine, the debate has opened on the possibility of including female voices, demonstrating the will to keep this cultural manifestation alive.
Preparations and Expectations
Preparations for this year’s celebration include the revival of traditional pieces and the introduction of new musical elements. Despite the expectations of rain, the community is looking forward to the celebration, remembering that, in case of bad weather, the solemnity of the singing will remain in the church.
