The safety of healthcare professionals: a matter of importance

The College of Doctors of Lleida and assaults on healthcare professionals

During 2023, the Col·legi de Metges de Lleida recorded four assaults, all of a verbal nature, against healthcare professionals, compared to the seven assaults registered the previous year, of which four were physical and three were verbal. The College encourages its members to report all assaults suffered in the professional field, whether verbal or physical, and offers them legal advice and psychological support through the Comprehensive Care Program for the Sick Doctor ( PAIMM) if necessary.

European Day against Attacks on Doctors and Health Professionals

The College of Doctors of Lleida has claimed the European Day against Attacks on Doctors and Healthcare Professionals, a social awareness campaign that is celebrated throughout Europe for the fifth consecutive year. This day was officially declared by the Confederation of European Medical Orders in 2020, reaffirming the importance of ensuring the safety of healthcare professionals as a basis for quality medical care.

Increase in complaints and the importance of the safety of healthcare professionals

Complaints of assaults on healthcare professionals increased during 2023, according to a report by the Spanish police presented last February 29. A total of 315 complaints were submitted, compared to 241 the previous year. Of the total, 54% were for verbal assaults and 46% for physical assaults. This increase in complaints highlights the importance of guaranteeing the safety of healthcare professionals, since violence against them affects healthcare activity, the health of those affected and breaks the relationship of trust between doctors and patients.
