The situation of the Segre basin

Change from emergency to alert phase

During the month of February, the Segre basin experienced a significant change in its situation. After 21 months in the emergency phase, it is now in the alert phase. This phase change is determined based on the capacity of the reservoirs, with 15% being the threshold that marks the difference between the two situations

Data from the Hydrographic Confederation of the Ebro

According to the records of the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation (CHE), at the end of February the reservoirs of the Segre basin were at 26% of their capacity. The entity’s monthly report indicates that the headwaters and the axis of the Ebro form a Territorial Drought Unit (UTS)

Improvement of reserves and accumulation of snow

Despite the general drought situation, the Segre basin has managed to abandon the emergency thanks to the slow recovery of water reserves during the year and the improvement of snow accumulation during the month of February. However, this improvement is very tight and the basin remains in a precautionary situation

Contrast with other basins in Catalonia

The situation in the Segre basin contrasts with that of the other basins in Catalonia, where water reserves continue to decrease despite the recent rains. Specifically, reserves are around 14.5% and less than 91 hm3 in the Ter-Llobregat system

impact

This change in the situation of the Segre basin has a significant impact in the context of the current climate emergency. It is important to be aware of the data and the measures taken to ensure a sustainable use of water in this area
