A new day of voting in search of the president
In a new day marked by uncertainty, the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) has met again with the aim of electing its new president. The previous meetings have not managed to break the tie between the two main candidates, Pilar Teso and Pablo Lucas, both with 10 votes each. Today, the judges of the Supreme Court, who are a fundamental part of the process, are preparing to face this challenge.
The context of the crisis in the CGPJ
For more than a year, the CGPJ has worked without a clear leader, a fact that has generated an atmosphere of tension and expectation. Two assemblies were held the previous week which ended with the same unsatisfactory result. After several attempts, the blockage was evident, and the lack of agreement has left the magistrates facing an unprecedented situation. The alliance between the PP and the PSOE to renew the members of the CGPJ has been the only consensual one and, despite this, the process of electing the president remains stagnant.
Female candidates and their role in judicial politics
The current dilemma revolves around Teso and Lucas. While Teso represents a hope for the progressive wing in the CGPJ, Lucas has established himself as the favorite of the conservative faction. Social interest is particularly focused on the possibility that, for the first time, a woman will hold the presidency of such an important body, which has traditionally been dominated by men. This reality is aggravated by the fact that despite the female majority in the judicial career, women continue to be underrepresented in decision-making positions.
A decisive moment for gender equality
The association Judges and Judges for Democracy (JJpD) has expressed the importance of this vote, stressing that the presence of women in the judiciary is more necessary than ever. María del Prado de l’Escoda, one of the authorized voices of the association, has insisted on the need for the female presence to not only be numerical, but to translate into power and influence. He comments that it is essential to reflect both the social and the judicial reality in the positions of maximum authority.
What to expect from the immediate future
The current scenario does not suggest an easy outcome. The division between the two blocs is palpable, and the prospects for consensus seem slim. So, the question that hangs over the CGPJ is whether we will see a definitive decision or whether uncertainty will continue to dominate in the coming sessions. JJpD members hope that the history of the CGPJ will change soon, but the gaps that need to be covered between the two blocs will remain in the spotlight of Spanish society.
