The uncertain future of the immigration reform in Spain

Conflict in Congress over the immigration reform

This Tuesday, Míriam Nogueras, spokesperson for Junts per Catalunya, reaffirmed in the Congress of Deputies that her position on the reform of the immigration law remains firm: they will oppose its approval. If the Popular Party persists in its rejection, the initiative presented by the Spanish Socialist Workers Party will remain without progress and Pedro Sánchez will face a new defeat at the parliamentary level. This setback will be accentuated as it coincides with the first anniversary of the general elections on July 23.

The reality of welcoming immigrants in Catalonia

During her speech in the chamber, the Junts deputy criticized the Government for what she considers an abuse of Catalan solidarity. This refers to the recent distribution of unaccompanied foreign minors, a decision that, in her opinion, ignores the real situation of Catalonia in terms of immigration. The legislator stressed the importance of having the necessary resources to guarantee the adequate integration and support of immigrants, highlighting the crucial need to ensure peaceful coexistence for both newcomers and those already established in the community.

Criticisms of immigration management and proposals for change

Míriam Nogueras did not hesitate to criticize what she considers ‘do-goodism’ on the part of the supposed left, as well as the ‘populism’ that, in her opinion, characterizes the right and extreme right in the handling of immigration issues. He reiterated that it is essential to establish a firm position in these situations and maintained that the proposed law, which would seek to regulate the distribution of immigrants through conferences with the Government and the autonomous communities, should be scrapped. In this sense, he urged the Executive to withdraw this initiative and to comply with the pact they reached in January, which consists of transferring powers regarding immigration to the Generalitat.

Dialogues in search of consensus

Despite the differences, police sources mentioned that on the morning of that same day, meetings were being held between the Socialist Party and Junts, as well as with the Popular Party, separately. They stressed that there is still hope of reaching a last-minute agreement, although they insisted that withdrawing the reform of the law is not in their plans.

The opposition of the Popular Party

Currently, it seems that the reform proposal promoted by the Socialist Party, Sumar and Canarian Coalition is doomed to failure. According to information from the leadership of the Popular Party, it was suggested that the possibility of reaching an agreement on this law was practically zero. From the party headquarters in Genoa, ironic comments were made about the situation, conveying that the treatment received in a recent video conference called by the Ministry of Children was unsatisfactory.

Return to the negotiating table

Some political leaders, such as the Canarian Coalition deputy, Cristina Valido, have expressed themselves in favor of withdrawing the reform of the immigration law if

A consensus is not achieved that allows its viability. However, to take this step, it is essential that both the Socialist Party and Sumar agree, given that these three groups are the ones that jointly supported the proposal. Valido expressed his intention to request that the vote be suspended if an agreement is not reached in the following hours, advocating to continue the dialogue.
