A Vote of Confidence with Conditions
Jovent Republicanà has given its support to the agreement between ERC and PSC, deciding to vote in favor of the investiture of Salvador Illa. However, this support does not imply a blind acceptance of the government’s future actions, as explained by Mar Besses, Member of Parliament. The young politician has made it clear that her training will not hesitate to break the voting discipline if she considers that ERC was influenced by proposals from the PSC that are not satisfactory.
The Historical Opportunity to Influence the Future
Besses has emphasized that the republican youths are faced with a ‘historic opportunity’ to set the direction of the new government of the Generalitat. The deputy has stated that her intention is to guide ERC towards its priorities, ensuring that its influence will not be limited to a specific moment, but will be maintained throughout the entire legislature.
Mistrust towards Illa, but a Necessary First Step
Despite the initial support, Besses has expressed a lack of confidence in Illa. He has defended the agreement as a first step to start a dialogue, and has insisted that his formation will be vigilant to ensure that the government meets its expectations. ‘If we are decisive for the investiture, we will be throughout the legislature’, he said, stressing the importance of conditioning the government’s actions.
Historically, Breaking Voting Discipline
Besses recalled that the Young Republican is no stranger to challenging voting discipline. Previously, they already rejected the management of Councilor Miquel Buch and opposed projects such as the Winter Games and the expansion of El Prat airport. “We will continue to exercise this responsibility if necessary,” he said, reaffirming the Young Republican’s commitment to his ideas.
Youth Priorities: Housing and Life Projects
Among the issues they consider essential, the Young Republican highlights the problem of housing and the need for young people to develop their life projects. Besses has regretted that during the previous legislature, the PSC has often sought alliances with Junts to block proposals that could have progressed on these issues. Thus, they undertake to be alert and to act if the socialist government does not adequately address these problems.
