Detention during the San Fermín festivities

During a routine control by police authorities in Pamplona on July 6, within the framework of the San Fermín Festival, an individual was arrested and subsequently released for alleged drug trafficking. The subject, brother of the president of the government of Navarra, María Chivite, was found in possession of synthetic substances, hashish and a considerable amount of cash. After being placed at the disposal of the judge, he was released on charges.

Safety device during festivities

The Navarrese government deployed a large police presence with more than 2,600 officers, including the National Police, Civil Guard, Foral Police and Pamplona Municipal Police, in order to guarantee security during the San Fermín festivities. These celebrations always represent a challenge in terms of security.

Response from María Chivite

Given the criticism received, the president of Navarra, María Chivite, rejected any attempt to relate her brother’s personal problem to government institutions. In a statement, Chivite denounced the situation, highlighting that many families face similar circumstances with their loved ones.

San Fermin festivities and incidents

The San Fermín Festival, which runs until July 14, began with the traditional ‘chupinazo’ and has been overshadowed by incidents of sexual violence. The sexual assault recorded in the old town of Pamplona has activated the protocol against this type of assault, with additional complaints of sexist behavior. The mayor of Pamplona, Joseba Asiron, has pointed out the seriousness of the situation and the application of the corresponding protocol.

Closure and public influx

The first running of the bulls, held on July 7, attracted an average of 1,160,000 viewers and obtained a screen share of 68.4% on La 1 and Canal 24 Horas, according to RTVE data.
