The growing concern about paramilitary infiltration
Recently, the Sumar party has called on the Ministry of the Interior to outlaw the Desokupa platform. This request has arisen after the Unified Police Union (SUP) announced its collaboration with the organization, which will be responsible for training 30,000 officers in personal defense techniques.
Reaction of the Ministry of the Interior to the controversy
The Ministry, led by Fernando Grande-Marlaska, has declared that it is considering the possibility of opening a file to investigate the legality of this agreement with the SUP, emphasizing that these actions could compromise the country’s democratic values.
Repeated criticism against Desokupa
The members of Sumar have expressed strong opposition to the activities of Desokupa, denouncing that these organizations cannot operate in a democratic system. In a message on the X social network, it was stated that ‘Desokupa must be considered illegal; society will not tolerate groups with paramilitary-type behavior’.
Statements that highlight the need for action
Lara Hernández, secretary of the Sumar Organization, highlighted some controversial statements by Daniel Esteve, leader of Desokupa, who defended the idea of ’cleaning the streets’. Hernández criticized that the Interior allows its collaboration with SUP to develop, while at the same time it undertakes to fight the extreme right.
Opinion of political representatives
Sumar’s spokesman, Íñigo Errejón, called the training offered by Desokupa to 30,000 national agents a dangerous precedent. In this context, he communicated that his group has proposed a formal question to the Ministry, asking for measures against the penetration of ultra-right tendencies in the police forces.
A call for reflection on security and democracy
Errejón emphasized that only with a serious reform agenda can the State face the challenges posed by extremist infiltration. He celebrated that the Ministry is willing to challenge the agreement, stating that public pressure can have a positive impact on governance.
The responsibility of the Rule of Law
Finally, Gerardo Pisarello, member of parliament for Sumar and leader of the Commons, insisted that the State must make us feel safe in public spaces and must deter hooliganism, stressing that a Rule of Law cannot be complicit in ‘actions that do not know the legality.
