A Look at the Perceptions and Positions of Young People
In Catalonia, the age group between 18 and 25 shows a tendency to take more conservative political positions compared to the majority of Catalan society. This segment of the population is also characterized by showing greater sympathy for pro-Spanish positions and less identification with political parties, especially those with pro-independence tendencies. In addition, this group perceives the Catalan language as less useful and shows a high degree of skepticism towards climate change. Likewise, they are the least likely to embrace feminism and to perceive the threat of the extreme right as less relevant. It is important to point out that this trend is not limited to Catalonia, but is a global phenomenon.
The Concerns and Challenges of Young People
In addition to their political positions, young people are particularly affected by job insecurity, difficulties in accessing housing, the climate emergency and the increase in hate speech. Likewise, they are often excluded from decision-making processes both in institutions and in organized civil society. These concerns are the result of a survey entitled ‘A growing discomfort: Survey on the political participation of youth in Catalonia’, published by the Guillem Agulló Training School.
