Girona gets complicated in the fight for second place in the League

Girona loses against Villarreal in Montilivi

This Tuesday, Girona made the fight for second place in the League, which gives access to participation in the next Spanish Super Cup, complicated by losing against Villarreal in Montilivi (0-1). Míchel’s team, which lost two points on the last day, against Alavés, in injury time, deserved better luck, as it generated more and better chances than Villarreal, but in an isolated action they conceded 0 -1, a goal that ended up being decisive, despite attempts to achieve at least a point.

Barça has the opportunity to extend the distance

Barça, then, this Thursday has the opportunity to extend the distance with Girona to 4 points, with 2 games left, a difference that could be definitive. To do this, however, the Blaugrana will have to beat Almería, who despite being bottom of the standings, put Xavi’s team in a lot of trouble in the Lluís Companys match in the first round.

First half without goals

The match started with a lot of pace, with both teams ruthlessly searching for the goal. In the 9th minute, Villarreal’s first big opportunity came, a shot from Traoré that Gazzaniga deflected with an excellent dive. And shortly after Álex Baena tried it, but his tight shot went just wide. As the minutes passed, Girona has calmed Villarreal’s momentum through longer possessions, less verticality.

Traoré makes the difference

Girona came out with a march in the second half, aware that they had to win to not miss the Super Cup train. The first to try was Yangel Herrera, with a shot that went wide. Villarreal’s response was led by Cuenca, who finished a great team play with a shot that did not find the target. And when it seemed that 1-0 was closer, it was 0-1, in an isolated action by Villarreal in which Traoré surpassed Gazzaniga (59′).

Girona seeks a draw without success

The goal did not change Girona’s momentum, and they were able to equalize immediately afterwards, with a Tsygankov shot hitting the crossbar (63′). Just two minutes later, Míchel’s team had a triple chance, from Eric Garcia, Dovbyk and Savinho, but between Jorgensen and the visiting defense they avoided a tie. As the minutes passed, Girona began to get impatient, which caused their attacks to be too hasty. Villarreal stayed behind, increasingly comfortable, until the final whistle.
