The economist Niño Becerra expresses his concern about the current situation in Spain

Santiago Niño Becerra, a renowned Spanish economist and professor of Economic Structure at the Sarriá Chemical Institute of the Ramón Llull University of Barcelona since 1994, has shared his opinion on two major problems that affect the country: rents and salaries.

According to Niño Becerra, in 2014 the average salary in Spain was 26,191 euros per year, while the rent for a home was 6.91 euros/m² per month. However, in 2023 the average annual salary increased to €30,237, but in 2014 euros it was equivalent to €24,782/year. Regarding rent, in April 2024 it stood at 12.3 euros/m² per month, which in 2014 euros was equivalent to 10.1 euros/m² per month.

These figures have led the economist to reflect on the gap between salaries and rents. According to his calculations, while the average real salary has grown by -5.37% between 2014 and 2023, the average rent has increased by 46.1%. This situation is alarming and poses a challenge for society.

The lack of public rental housing policies as one of the causes

Niño Becerra has pointed out that one of the causes that have contributed to this situation is the lack of public rental housing policies in Spain in recent decades. According to the economist, closing the gap between salaries and rents has become practically impossible due to the deficit and debt reduction commitments that Spain has with Brussels.

In summary, economist Niño Becerra expresses his concern about the current situation in Spain, where rents have increased significantly compared to salaries. According to him, the lack of public rental housing policies has contributed to this gap, and closing it has become increasingly difficult due to the country’s economic commitments.
