Carles Puigdemont takes the amnesty law in Congress for granted and bets on a new pro-independence stage

The President of the Council of the Republic demands to recover the unity and the mandate of 1-O and warns that the repression will not stop with the measure of grace

Carles Puigdemont is already clear that the amnesty law for political prisoners and exiles will be approved in the Congress of Deputies, after this Saturday he called for a new phase in the pro-independence process “now that the fight against repression will stop to be a priority”. He stated this in the assembly of the Council of the Republic, where he was ratified as president, held in Sant Cebrià de Rosselló, in Northern Catalonia; the same day that Sumar’s spokesman, Jaume Asens, has announced that the pardon is “imminent”.

The leader of Junts has defended that it is time to “gather and sew” independenceist unity and leave behind “defeatism” to face this new stage, which must serve, according to him, to vindicate the mandate of 1-O. However, he assured that “no law will end the repression” and that with the approval of the amnesty there will continue to be threats to democracy and freedom.

Together and ERC hold their national councils with different views on the amnesty law

Puigdemont’s statements also coincide with the celebration of the Junts and ERC national councils. As for the members, the president of the party, Laura Borràs, highlighted the “firm attitude” of her members in negotiating the amnesty law with the Spanish government, at the same time accusing the ERC government led by Pere Aragonés to consolidate “social dependence” and to ERC not to “want to upset the socialists”. On the other hand, he assured that the “judicial offensive” against former president Carles Puigdemont and the accusation of terrorism is “unworthy”, after the Supreme Court opened a case this Thursday.

For his part, Oriol Junqueras has called on “everyone” to put aside “short-term tactics” and “not to waste the opportunity” to approve the amnesty law, which returns to Congress next week of the Deputies. In this sense, he has denounced that “the latest version of repression is to try to accuse independence of terrorism”, and has rejected that “it does not hold up anywhere”.

Asens announces that the amnesty law is “a matter of hours or days” and that the PSOE will accept amendments from Junts

Be that as it may, Asens has announced to El Suplement de Catalunya Ràdio that the amnesty law is “a matter of hours or days”, since the PSOE will accept Junts amendments, he said. The joint general secretary, Jordi Turull, downplayed this optimism and wanted to clarify that the formation is not responsible “for what third parties say or speculate about hypothetical agreements”. Now, however, Puigdemont implicitly accepts that the agreement exists and takes amnesty for granted.
