The fire ravaged two buildings in the Campanar neighborhood and it has not yet been possible to gain access to the interior
A fire of unknown origin caused the death of four people yesterday in two buildings in the Campanar district of Valencia. The victims, who have not yet been identified, were located with drones by the emergency services. The firefighters have not yet been able to enter the interior of the buildings, where there could be more dead or injured. According to the police, there are fourteen people who could not be located, but the number could vary in the next few hours. The buildings were occupied by families of foreign origin, which made it difficult to communicate with their relatives or friends.
The wind favored the spread of the flames and made the rescue difficult
The fire started yesterday afternoon, around 5.30 pm, in one of the two blocks of flats, one with fourteen floors and one with ten, which are part of the same complex. The fire quickly spread to the other block, fueled by a strong wind that made the firefighters’ work difficult. The flames were so intense that they could be seen from several parts of the city. The residents of the affected buildings experienced moments of anguish and despair, and some had to be rescued by firefighters from the balconies, where they waited for help surrounded by fire.
The police set up a hotline for victims and are investigating the cause of the fire
The buildings set on fire are located between Carrer del Mestre Rodrigo and Avenida del General Avilés, a very busy area of Valencia. Local police have blocked traffic and evacuated residents from adjacent buildings as a precaution. It has also activated a helpline for the victims and their relatives: 690 167 830. The scientific and judicial police are investigating the causes of the fire, which are still unknown. Below are some images of the fire, captured yesterday. We will continue to report on the evolution of the facts.
