The Board of Spokespersons approves the ERC initiative with the support of most groups
The new promenade that has been created after burying the FGC tracks that crossed the neighborhoods of Gràcia and Can Feu will be named after the mayor Antoni Farrés, as agreed by the Board of Spokespersons of the Sabadell council this Wednesday. The proposal, presented by ERC, received the favorable vote of the PSC, Crida, Junts, Sabadell En Comú Podem and the abstention of the PP and Vox.
Antoni Farrés, a beloved and respected mayor
The motion recognizes the figure of the mayor Antoni Farrés, who governed the city between 1979 and 1999, as the “most charismatic, respected and beloved of the contemporary era”. The text highlights its “unequivocally democratic, workerist and Catalanist” values and its political and institutional practice “characterized by the commitment to the public interest, the standard of honesty and the ability to reach agreements and build consensus much more than an acronym”. “Modern Sabadell and the city of today cannot be understood without him and his character, and his legacy has achieved the unanimous approval of Sabadell society,” the text concludes.
A neighborhood claim
The idea of dedicating the walk to Mayor Antoni Farrés came from the Association of Residents of Gràcia, who two months after his death (February 13, 2009, now 25 years ago) proposed that the space that remained free after burying the roads bearing his name. The underground project was completed ten years ago, and the development of this space is currently in the bidding process.
Other changes in the nomenclature
The motion also recalls that the City Council has approved other additions and changes in the nomenclature of the city: a space dedicated to Muriel Casals, and another to Pere Casaldàliga; the elimination from the public space of several characters linked to the military dictatorships of Primo de Rivera and Franco and to slavery, and the erection of two monuments: one dedicated to Francesc Layret and another to Carlos Gardel, at the proposal of the association Gardelianos Sabadell – Tucarembó in 2014.
